Disney Movie Coco Story - The Family Legacy

During the interview with professor Joaquim Parra Marujo, he made reference to the Disney movie Coco. The film portrays the life of a young boy who has an enormous passion for music, but who has to keep it a secret, as in his family it is forbidden to be a musician.

Music is a “taboo” and therefore prohibited in this family, as the main character's great-grandfather left his family to become a musician.  When the young man decides that he wants to become a musician, he suffers from the family’s ban, but as he has this dream, he wants to follow it no matter what.

As the story unfolds, the young man is transported to the realm of the dead during the “Día de los Muertos” where he meets his great-grandfather and realizes the true story behind his mysterious disappearance.

At the end of the story, the whole family accepts music again and the young man manages to follow his dream of becoming a musician.

From this wonderful Disney movie, we can highlight several messages, among them a message of hope about the importance of each one in order to keep alive and persist in achieving their dreams. Another message is related to the importance of knowing each one’s family history and how it’s reflected in the different behavioural patterns of each family member.

It is very clear how the legacy of each family member has an impact on the family system and on the development of each individual, so it is important to know the roots of each one.
