Kisa Gotami – The Discovery of Mortality

Webinar with Maria Gorjão Henriques

In the webinar held on September 8, Maria Gorjão Henriques told the story of Kisa Gotami, one of the most famous in Buddhism.

Kisa was the wife of a rich and powerful man from Savatthi. One day, after losing her only child, the woman, who had been desperate, looked for someone to help her recover her child. Her sense of loss was so great, that many thought she had lost her mind.

Following the advice of a village elder, she went to visit Buddha to try to see if he could help her. It was then that Buddha told her that she could bring her son back if she could find mustard seeds in a house where no one had ever died, so the woman immediately began her search.

Kisa desperately went from house to house, but to her disappointment, she couldn't find a house where no one had died. When faced with this fact, she began to gain more compassion for herself and the people around her, managing to understand the lesson that Buddha was trying to teach her: there is no one who escapes her mortality.

According to Maria Gorjão Henriques, what the Buddha did was to call Kisa to reality, because her mind, until then, did not want to process what happened. which is very close and dear.
